Good Morning Mr. Duksa,
I am following up on our phone conversation concerning the OWTS design for 40025 Baker Way. Our biggest concern with the submitted design is the soils classification of Type “O”. This classification was used in the 2013-2017 CDPHE OWTS regulation, but is no longer valid. Type “O” were classified as sandy soils with greater than 35% rocks. In the current Reg. 43, this soil profile would be considered a Type “R” soil. Type R soils require an unlined sand filter with pressure distribution. The soil should be further classified to determine the subclass of type “R” soil (e.g. R-0, R-1, R-2) to calculate the bed sizing and depth.
Additionally, we have concerns regarding the depth to groundwater identified in the design report. The report states that groundwater was not encountered to depth of 11’ bgs. Based on the proximity of the OWTS to the Yampa River and recent above average precipitation, it appears that groundwater should be much closer to the ground surface. RCDEH is hesitant to issue a permit for any subterranean soil treatment area at this property, until the depth to groundwater and soil type is field confirmed. Based on the current information, it appears a mounded, unlined sand filter with pressure distribution will be required to meet the limitations present at the construction site. Please feel free to reach out to RCDEH with additional questions.
